Lookup Service Dashboards upgrade

The perfSONAR public dashboard (aka Lookup Service dashboard) has just been upgraded.
Thanks to Grafana 10 a new browsing UI has been implemented with improved filtering
capabilities. It still lists all the perfSONAR public instances and provides useful
statistics about those deployments so that perfSONAR users can find the best suited
target perfSONAR node to make measurements.

Go ahead and test for yourself at https://stats.perfsonar.net!

We welcome your feedback on the perfSONAR user list.

perfSONAR Office Hours

In the wake of TLPW Perf Club coming to a close, the perfSONAR team
has decided to try out a similar open forum for current and
prospective users to discuss perfSONAR-related topics. We’re calling
it perfSONAR Office Hours and plan to host it once per quarter as part
of the ESNet CI Lunch and Learn series. Topics could include, but are
not limited to:

Deployment

Making measurements and interpreting the results

System tuning

Ideas for new features

Bug reports and security concerns should, as always, be reported
directly to the development team at
perfsonar-developer@internet2.edu.

The first meeting will take place Friday, February 16 at 2:00 p.m. ET
and can be attended using the regular CI Lunch and Learn Zoom at
https://esnet.zoom.us/j/804696793.

Statement on Operating System Support, 2023 Edition

NB: This is not a re-post from two years ago.

Last week, Red Hat announced that it has ceased distributing the
source code for Red Hat Enterprise Linux to the public and barred its
licensees from doing the same. This closes the loophole it left open
that made Alma Linux and Rocky Linux (and, originally, CentOS)
possible, or at least easier, in the first place. The maintainers of
Alma and Rocky have indicated that Red Hat’s actions make their
ability to maintain them more-complicated but should only have a minor
impact on their release processes.

For our part:

Support for CentOS 7 will continue until it reaches end of life next
June.

Support for perfSONAR on Alma and Rocky in their EL8 and EL9 flavors
remains unchanged. While that support is currently considered beta,
we will remove that designation once those builds have seen
wide-enough use outside the development team to be considered stable.
We do not anticipate major problems with either. Red Hat Enterprise
Linux and Oracle Linux will continue to be supported on an
advisory-only basis. This means the team may pass along any
information arising from informal experimentation or reports from the
community. Supporting these distributions will not be a priority,
although we will integrate patches from the community that make
perfSONAR work there and don’t cause problems for the
officially-supported distributions.

Support for any forks of RHEL will be considered if they turn into
viable distributions and the perfSONAR community appears to be headed
for a critical mass of adopting them.

Our support for Debian and its derivatives will remain unchanged. As
part of an upcoming reorganization of our Docker containers, we may
start basing them on a Debian-derived distribution to avoid
instability caused by upheaval in the EL-derived world.

The perfSONAR team has an in-person developers’ meeting scheduled for
late next month, and this will be a topic of discussion. While we
understand that, like two years ago, most of you are still trying to
find your way through this, early feedback on where you’re headed will
help us make decisions about what to support and get that support in
place in a timely manner.

As always, if you have questions or concerns, please drop us a line at
perfsonar-developer@internet2.edu.

New Lookup Service Dashboards

The new perfSONAR public dashboard is a powerful tool, built on top of the
Lookup Service, the global directory of all perfSONAR public instances, that
provides statistics about the public perfSONAR deployments all around the world.
It is divided in five sections where you can find general information, maps, and
specific data regarding the perfSONAR hosts and services.

You can filter and search for Communities, hostname, perfSONAR utilisation
statistics and characteristics of the various public deployments. We welcome
your feedback on the perfSONAR user list.

Go ahead and start exploring at https://stats.perfsonar.net!

And read more about it on the APNIC blog.

Statement on Operating System Support

As many of you are aware, Red Hat announced last December that all
support for CentOS 8 will cease on December 31, 2021. At the time of
the announcement, the perfSONAR team was in the process of a
long-overdue port to that distribution; that project was halted
pending an assessment of the post-CentOS landscape. During our recent
developer meeting, the team had some discussions and would like to
share the decisions made about operating system support:

CentOS 7 will continue to be fully-supported until its
originally-scheduled end of life on June 30, 2024.

Alma Linux 8 will become fully-supported and
the team’s primary environment for development, build and
distribution. Our RPM repositories and ISO images will be built using
this distribution. The first Alma-based release will be perfSONAR
5.0.

Rocky Linux 8 has a small amount of catching
up to do relative to Alma but is shaping up to be a solid alternate.
As it should be bug-compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, we will
be revisiting it regularly and anticipate supporting running the
Alma-built RPMs there.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 and Oracle Linux 8 will be supported on an
advisory-only basis. This means the team may pass along any
information arising from informal experimentation or reports from the
community. Supporting these distributions will not be a priority,
although we will integrate patches from the community that make
perfSONAR work there and don’t cause problems for those we do support.

CentOS Stream will not be supported, but we may use it internally
as a way to make support for distributions derived from Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 9 more timely.

CentOS 8 will not be supported in any fashion.

There are no changes in current or future support for Debian and
Ubuntu. There is work underway to make both first-class citizens in
our development environment rather than the ports they have been
previously. This should make perfSONAR on those distributions a
better product.

We will, as always, have documentation and programs available to help
with the migration from CentOS 7 to the new systems.

If you have questions or concerns, please drop us a line at
